No mention of Duterte in Biden’s PH Independence Day message

U.S. President Joe Biden did not mention, more so compliment, President Rodrigo Duterte in his 2021 Philippine Independence message, as a video has falsely claimed.

A June 13 video uploaded by YouTube channel PH Breaking News bore an erroneous headline that reads in part:

ITO ANG GINAWA NI PRES. DUTERTE KAYA HUMANGA SI U.S PRES JOE BIDEN SA PILIPINAS (This is what Pres. Duterte did, which made U.S. Pres. Joe Biden amazed with the Philippines)

The channel ran a clip of Biden’s message and added an equally erroneous news ticker that said:

U.S SALUDO KAY PRES. DUTERTE (U.S. salutes Pres. Duterte)!

The video’s thumbnail also included an incorrect caption:

Napabilib si Biden (Biden is in awe)!

Biden did not mention Duterte or any of his achievements in his June 12 speech commemorating the Philippines' 123rd Independence Day. Instead, he noted the contributions to American life of four million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans (timestamp: 0:37).

They make invaluable contributions to communities all across our country. They enrich the American character - making our nation stronger and more vibrant.

Biden also called for the continuation of Philippine-US cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic (timestamp: 0:54).

As we honor this joyful of independence and friendship, let’s also look to the future, at the challenges our two countries must continue to work to take on together, from defeating this pandemic and strengthening the global preparedness for the next one, to advancing the free and open Indo-Pacific region for all peoples.

The White House announced on June 3 that the Philippines will be one of the recipients of the first 25 million doses of its 80 million vaccine surplus allocation.

Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez said in the May 31 Palace briefing that the Philippines is part of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine recipients from the U.S.
