A social card of ABS-CBN announcing the start of the general community quarantine in Metro Manila has been altered to state that people are on their own.
The manipulated card shared on Facebook and Twitter uses ABS-CBN News’ template for breaking news complete with its logo and social media icons. It reads:
Bahala na kayo sa buhay nyo starting June 1
The phrase literally means, “You’re in charge of your life starting June 1.” It’s commonly used to express frustration with or lack of sympathy for a person, including giving up on that person her and not caring what happens to him or her anymore.
One Facebook user wrote:
Ayan ha. Ibig sabihin kanya kanya na Tayong alaga sa sarili natin (There. It means we fend for ourselves)
The genuine ABS-CBN social card published May 28 states:
Metro Manila placed under General Community Quarantine starting June 1
It accompanied the status update:
Tuluyan nang isasailalim sa general community quarantine simula Hunyo ang National Capital Region kung saan matatagpuan ang bulto ng kumpirmadong kaso ng #COVID19 sa bansa (The National Capital Region, where the bulk of the country’s confirmed COVID019 are recorded, will be placed under general community quarantine starting July).
The fabricated social card is classified as imposter content, a type of information disinformation in which an organization’s logo or influential name is linked to false information to make the information sound credible.
