Duterte supporters post misleading claim on Sara Duterte’s candidacy

There are no recent media accounts that Davao City mayor Sara Duterte has decided to run for president, contrary to a claim of a pro-Duterte Facebook page. But there are recent news reports of a congressman's prediction that she would.

The May 24 post of the Facebook page Duterteduterteduterte ran a photo of Duterte and London-based blogger Malcolm Conlan doing a fist bump, and a text overlay that reads:

Conlan also tweeted the same photo on Twitter that day.

Duterte has not announced that she is running for president next year.

In an interview with Davao City Disaster Radio last Feb. 22 Duterte in fact said she will not run for president in the upcoming elections. A translation by GMA News showed Duterte saying:

Sa ngayon, no. There is no chance na magbago ang isip ko. Anong mga rason ko? I do not want to enumerate the reasons. Hindi lang ito isa, marami, because hahaba ang usapan at baka maka-offend and may ma-hurt na mga tao (As of now, no. There is no chance that I will change my mind. What could be my reason? I do not want to enumerate the reasons, there is not just one, but many; the talk is long and I might offend and hurt other people).

Early this year, Duterte expressed her intention to run for president in 2034, not 2022.

Duterteduterteduterte’s May 24 post came amid reports by The Manila Times, Daily Tribune and SMNI News, among others, of Albay Rep. Joey Salceda’s projection that Duterte will run for president in 2022.

In an interview May 24, Salceda said:

Common sense, as an ordinary person would read chat between two friends. Then sabi ko (I said) “Can I release a screenshot of your reply?”, sabi niya (she said), ‘Opo Cong (Yes, Cong).’ So that permission to release a screenshot of her reply, my mind tells that it leaves no doubt that she will run as president and she will win.

In the latest Pulse Asia survey, Duterte leads the list of probable presidential candidates in the May 2022 elections with a national voter preference of 27%. The Commission on Elections has set Oct. 1 to 8 for the filing of candidacies for elective positions.

Duterteduterteduterte’s FB post garnered over 2,800 likes, 322 comments and 82 shares as of writing. The FB page has gained 223,481 likes and 224,897 followers since it was created on Facebook last Feb. 2016.

Conlan’s tweet has reached 446 likes, 72 retweets and nine quote tweets. (JR)
