A photo collage showing presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in different relief operations for typhoon victims through the years contains two pictures of events that have nothing to do with such operations.
In fact, one was taken at the foundation anniversary celebration of a Quezon City barangay and the other at a Christmas gift-giving event.
A pro-Marcos Facebook account, Bbm Kami, posted the misleading compilation of nine photos Dec. 22 with the caption:
Palaging sinasabing wala daw ginagawa si BBM at biglang lumalabas lang kapag kampanya pero di nila alam na madalang lang exposure niya sa mainstream media pero di nila magawang mag fact check sa mismong facebook page niya. Tahimik lang pero may puso at dedikasyon sa pagtulong. Yan ang tunay na Presidente. Hindi puro photo ops lang ❤✌ (They always say that BBM doesn’t do anything and that he only appears during the campaign season. What they don’t know is that he just doesn’t get enough exposure in mainstream media and they do not fact-check his own Facebook page. He’s just quiet but he has a heart and dedication to help. The topmost left photo in the collage showing Marcos hugging an elderly woman and the text, “2009, ONDOY, ” was taken during the 49th Foundation Day Celebration of Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City in December 2009, as shown by a reverse image search.
The photo appears on Marcos’ website, which reported that the then Ilocos Norte representative was the keynote speaker and had distributed Christmas goodies and personalized gifts to the crowd during the occasion. Marcos was running for the Senate at the time.
Meanwhile, the topmost right photo of Marcos handing a bag of goods to another elderly woman and the text “2014, GLENDA” was taken in December 2015, based on a tweet by Marcos himself about the gift-giving during the Christmas season.
His tweet:
Pagbibigayan ang tunay na diwa ng kapaskuhan. Huwag nating kaligtaan ang ating mga kababayang nangangailangan (Giving is the true spirit of Christmas. Let’s not forget our countrymen in need)
Marcos was then running for vice president.
Supertyphoon “Yolanda” battered the Philippines in November 2013, killing more than 6,000 people. Eight months later, “Glenda” slammed into the country.
The Facebook account Bbm Kami has 686 followers; its post featuring the misleading collage garnered 433 reactions, 33 comments and 85 shares in less than 24 hours. (RA)
