A Facebook user posted an altered photo of Japanese-Australian musician George “Joji” Kusunoki Miller with a false claim that Miller was “Ka George,” a University of the Philippines graduate who is an activist and New People’s Army leader.
The photo was shared June 14 to a pro-Duterte page, (vf)DDS/ DIEHARD DUTERTE SUPPORTERS, with the status update supporting the Anti-Terrorism Bill:
grabe tlga mga kbtaan ngaun (The youth are outrageous today) #YestoAntiTerrorBill
The text accompanying the photo of Miller in barong and UP’s graduation sash, the sablay, and another showing the musician being tackled said Ka George was arrested during an undercover operation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and many had fallen under his influence:
Eto si Ka George, isang UP graduate at aktibista. He joined the NPA and became a leader. He was caught at an undercover manhunt operation by the AFP. Many victims had fallen under Ka George’s influence and many soldiers had risked their lives as well)
It further said:
We need the anti-terror bill! Sayang ang mga estudyante na nagiging aktibistia at nilalason nang NPA (It’s a pity for students who become activists and are being poisoned by NPA)
The NPA is the military wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. In 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a proclamation declaring them as terrorist groups. In May, the president put up a P2 million reward for information leading to the arrest of communist leaders.
The photo showing Miller in a barong was photoshopped. A reverse image search shows Miller clad in a T-shirt in the original photo, which posted in several Tumblr accounts.
A reverse image search of the other image where Miller was being tackled shows it is related to a GIF of him in a fandom profile under his online alias, Filthy Frank.
The questionable post had generated a total of 519 interactions (208 reactions, 249 comments, and 62 shares) before it was taken down by the owner, but a screenshot of it is posted on the Facebook page DDS Wisdom. (AG)
