A road near the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center in The Hague had already been paved and improved years before former President Rodrigo Duterte was detained there in March 2025, contrary to a Facebook reel suggesting Dutch authorities improved it after profiting from his supporters’ visits.
The video, uploaded Feb. 20 by Facebook user “Carlos Wanders,” claimed the Dutch government fixed “Duterte Street” because of the influx of overseas Filipinos and Duterte supporters in the area.
Although uploaded in February, the post continued to draw comments as of mid-May. It had also gained more than 152,000 views, 7,600 likes, 404 comments and 662 shares as of writing.
“Duterte Street” is not the official name of the road. The video refers to Pompstationsweg, the road beside the ICC detention center.
The text in the video reads:
Napaayos ng Dutch Government ang Duterte Street, The Hague, Netherlands (The Dutch government has fixed Duterte Street, The Hague, Netherlands).
Carlos Wanders wrote in the caption:
DUTERTE STREET PINAAYOS NG DUTCH GOVERNMENT (The Dutch government had Duterte Street fixed)
The user also said in the video the street was previously unpaved and was located in an area that used to be a forest:
Dati… hindi pa ‘to developed eh. Siguro kumita na sila, ang government dito, kaya inayos na ‘to. Dating gubat pa ‘to guys. Hindi pa ‘to sementado dati, eh. Ngayon sementado na, oh (Before… this place wasn’t developed yet. Maybe they started earning money here, that’s why the government fixed this up. This used to be a forest, guys. This wasn’t even cemented before. Now it’s all paved already, look)
But Google Maps street view imagery from October 2009 shows Pompstationsweg paved and open to vehicles.

Imagery from August 2020 also shows the area already developed.

Carlos Wanders frequently posts about Duterte. His Feb. 20 video was shared on TikTok by user pamski3, who further suggested that authorities in The Hague had profited from visits of Duterte supporters and did not want to release him. (AA)
