State-run PTV misdates COVID-19 graphic

An erroneously dated COVID-19 graphic of the state-run People’s Television Network (PTV) on its Facebook page has created confusion among netizens.

PTV’s graphic summarizing the number of COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, bore the wrong date, “January 4, 2021.”

The country recorded last Jan. 4 a total of 5,434 new cases, 611 recoveries and 18 new deaths, according to data released daily by the Department of Health. The 26.5% positivity rate was attributed to the holiday-related mobility.

The country reported on Jan. 4 last year 959 new cases, 26 recoveries and six new deaths,. The positivity rate stood at 5.31% that day.

PTV’s misdated graphic circulated in various online groups, arousing disbelief over how the number of new cases, recoveries and new deaths last Jan. 4 could match those from a year ago.

One of the netizens who apparently didn’t realize the PTV had misstated the date compared several graphics and ended up saying: "Gusto ko na sanang maniwala sa bilang na lumalabas. Pero masyado naman yatang nagkataon ang pagkaka-pareho ng bilang noong 2021 at ngayong taon sa kaparehong petsa (I want to believe in the figures that are being released. But it’s too much of a coincidence that the figures from 2021 and this year are exactly the same)!!!"

PTV has not corrected its mistake as of writing. Its post has collected more than 2,100 likes, 530 comments and 234 shares. (Update: As of Jan. 6, the graphic is no longer available. You may view the original archived by FactRakers. PTV has replaced the image with another showing the correct date. --Ed.)

PTV replaced the misdated graphic on Jan. 6. Screenshot of the modified graphic.
