Tom Holland imitated Spider-Man co-star, not Baterbonia

An edited video circulating on social media makes it appear that British actor Tom Holland imitated the late Ateneo basketball player Rene Baterbonia. The original footage shows the British actor recreating a meme featuring his Spider-Man co-star Jacob Batalon.

An X account, @NandoDura89, posted the edited video on Oct. 2 with the caption:

I’m boycotting Avengers: Doomsday. Hindi niyo man lang RENErespito ang namayapa na (You didn't even respect the late RENE)

The edited video shows Holland striking a pose and laughing, with an image of Baterbonia seemingly doing the same pose in the lower-left corner. The text superimposed on the footage reads:

TOM HOLLAND GINAYA SI RENE BATERBONIA (TOM HOLLAND IMITATED RENE BATERBONIA)

The post had received about 493,000 views, 99 replies, 2,100 reposts, 16,000 likes and 1,300 bookmarks as of Oct. 4. The video was also shared on Facebook.

Some appeared to believe Holland was mocking Baterbonia and reprimanded him, while others recognized the edited video and corrected the misleading interpretation.

Baterbonia, an up-and-coming Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball player, tragically drowned alongside Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Aurora on June 8, 2026.

The original video, posted on July 18 on the official Sony Pictures Mexico TikTok account, shows Holland, Batalon and another Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-star, Zendaya, recreating each other’s famous memes during a press tour for their then upcoming movie.

Holland recreated Batalon’s famous freeze-frame of him talking in a suit, known online as the “CEO of Sex” meme. (VS)
