Photo on Aquino, Duterte relief operations misleads

Facebook user JDennis J Awit shared a misleading image of what he claimed to be packed relief goods during the Aquino and Duterte administrations.

The Nov. 5 post that contained the image, a composite of two photos, said:

Sino ang Disente (Who is decent)?

Reverse image searches reveal both photographs were of relief goods packed during President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.

The photo he claimed was taken during former president Benigno Aquino III’s term was first published by Rappler on Oct. 23, 2016. Duterte assumed the presidency on June 30, 2016.

The news article said the photo was taken during relief operations in Tuguegarao City for areas hit by typhoon “Lawin.”

The FB post, however, cropped the original photo to show only the plastic bags and labeled it “Aquino.”

The other photograph was taken May 26, 2017 and published by GMA News Online. It showed relief goods intended for evacuees who fled the fighting in Marawi City between government troops and the terrorist groups Maute and Abu Sayyaf, which began three days earlier.

The Aquino had adopted a mechanized production system to pack relief goods. Items were packed in boxes before being stacked, sealed and delivered, as shown in a Sept. 30, 2015 video posted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s YouTube account dswdserves.

The post received 194 reactions, 42 comments and 958 shares. (MC, JGL, HP)
