A website posted a doctored image of protestors supposedly rallying in front of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac.
The headline of Pinas Trend News' Oct. 12 post said:
FINALLY! DUTERTE ADMINISTRATION TO COLLECT MORE THAN P100 BILLION WORTH OF TAXES FROM HACIENDA LUISITA INC.
The photo at Hacienda Luisita earlier appeared in a 2017 article from website PhilNews.xyz detailing the same story with a different figure. It was also recently recycled by a website on Oct. 24.
The photo is a composite of four different images and a text layer, which were tracked down using Google’s reverse image search and photo metadata and analysis tools.
Google’s reverse image search reveals the original background of the image, which showcases the entrance to Hacienda Luisita, was taken from a 2005 blog article by American writer Chris Pforr detailing his visit to Hacienda Luisita. It was taken on April 30, 2005 at 12:58 p.m. using a FujiFilm FinePix 3800, according to image metadata tool EXIF Data Viewer.
Using FotoForensic’s error level analysis, some sections on the photo show significantly different error levels, indicating digital modification.
The letters above the wall of Hacienda Luisita appear to be photoshopped into the picture, as no search results yielded photos showing the letters appearing with the original image.
The image of protestors supposedly marching in front of the entrance of Hacienda Luisita was cropped and taken from a Bulatlat article published in January 2011.
Meanwhile, the image of President Benigno Aquino III appeared in March 2007 in a blog and in a 2010 news article published by Philnews.com.
The article has since been shared 33 times by different Facebook pages according to CrowdTangle. It has a total interaction of 1,662 reactions, 273 comments and 179 shares. (BM)
