News sites misstate figures on PH-Russia business deals

News websites Daily Tribune and Citizen Express on Oct. 6 misreported that President Rodrigo Duterte clinched business deals worth more than $600 million or about P31 billion during his visit to Russia.

Daily Tribune said in its lead:

President Rodrigo Duterte announced more than $600 million worth of business deals signed by Russian and Philippine firms in his arrival speech at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Citizen Express’ lead read:

Sa kanyang pagbalik sa Pilipinas mula Russia, inanunsyo ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte ang lagpas $600 million o 31 billion pesos na business deals na napirmahan sa pagitan ng mga kumpanya mula Russia at Pilipinas (On his return to the Philippines from Russia, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte announced that business deals amounting to more than $600 million or 31 billion pesos were signed by companies from Russia and the Philippines).

In his arrival speech at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City the day the reports appeared, Duterte said:

More than P620 million in business deals were also signed during the Philippines-Russia Business Forum in Moscow.

This is roughly $12 million.

Duterte said the deals include “bilateral cooperation agreements on the peaceful uses of energy” and “foreign policy consultations.”
