Tweet claiming Catholic groups rallied against UST dance troupe is satire

A tweet claiming Catholic youth groups protested against the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe outside the Mall of Asia Arena during the UAAP Cheerdance Competition is satire.

Twitter user @niccobabyy posted the following image on Dec. 10 after the Salinggawi Dance Troupe’s Lady Gaga-inspired performance in the cheerdance competition:

The image’s caption reads:

BREAKING: Catholic youth groups protest against UST salinggawi dance troupe outside Mall of Asia Arena 😮😮 #UAAPCDC2022

The image of protesters he used was originally taken by Romeo Ranoco in May 2012 for Reuters during musician Lady Gaga’s concert in Manila, Philippines, where Catholic groups staged protests against her concert.

User @niccobabyy had to clarify on the same day that his tweet was fake after people believed the claim was true.

A reply tweeted by user @pjsane19 says:

Magalit kayo sa injustice. Sa corruption. Sa abusadong politko. Hindi sa cheerdance (Be mad at injustice. At corruption. At abusive politicians. Not at a cheerdance).

In his clarification, user @niccobabyy posted the following image:

The caption says:

yall cant seriously think this is real. bahala kayo jan (You all can’t seriously think this is real. You’re on your own on that)

The satirical tweet has amassed 651 retweets, 1,234 quote tweets, and 7,686 likes, while the clarification only received 10 likes. (TN)
